Some of the smartest bettors barely touch the moneyline. Instead they bet totals โ the over/under โ because it lets you have an opinion on how a game will be played without caring who wins. Here’s how it works.
What is a total?
The bookmaker sets a number for the combined score of both teams. You bet whether the real total will be over or under that line.
- Bet the over and you need a high-scoring game.
- Bet the under and you want a defensive grind.
The half-point (e.g. 215.5) exists so there’s never a tie.

Why totals are a sharp’s favourite
You don’t need to predict a winner โ you need to predict a style of game. That’s often easier and less emotional. Pace, tempo, weather, injuries to key scorers, and how two teams match up all push the total up or down.
You’re not betting on a team. You’re betting on the kind of game it’ll be.
What moves a total
- Pace. Fast teams create more possessions and more points โ good for the over. Grind-it-out teams favour the under.
- Injuries. A star scorer out usually drops the total; a key defender out can raise it.
- Weather (for outdoor sports). Wind and rain in football suppress scoring.
- Motivation and stakes. Tense playoff games often play slower and tighter than the regular season.
The beginner traps
- Betting overs because they’re “fun.” Casual money loves the over (rooting for points), which can inflate the line. The value is often on the under.
- Ignoring line movement. If a total drops sharply, sharp money is on the under โ and vice versa. Follow the move.
As always, confirm the current number on your platform before betting, stick to your limits, and never chase. Must be 21+.
